 Patrick Wilson: Dark City

Los Angeles artist Patrick Wilson opens a solo exhibition of recent paintings at Brian Gross Fine Art on Thursday, April 18, with a reception for the artist from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. The exhibition will continue through June 1. Titled Dark City, this group of paintings continues Patrick Wilson’s exploration of surface, color and composition.

Meticulously applying layers of alkyd and oil, Wilson creates compositions of translucent veils. His reductive abstractions are color saturated in complex tones of smoky pinks, deep purples, and vibrant blues and bronzes. This series, experimenting with a vivid palette, explores the detail in the ordinary with an urban bent. Smaller scale works such as Entertainment Center and Table evoke the domestic interior, while larger works seem to recall a sense of urbanism. A selection of bold horizontal works of varying hues of blue, with titles like Duct, Cage, and Wire conveys a gritty industrialism and atmospheric presence.

Patrick Wilson incites introspection of his impeccable compositions by introducing pivotal visual markers. Matte details as tiny geometries punctuate the interplay of surfaces. Other detail manifests translucently beneath the topmost layer of oil, simultaneously anchoring and lightening the paintings. Two horizontal works in smokey pinks, Floating House and Sinking House, reveal this paradoxical interplay between gravity and levity.

Patrick Wilson was born in Redding, CA in 1970. He received his B.A. from the University of California at Davis in 1993 and his M.F.A. from the Claremont Graduate School in 1995. Wilson has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in California and New York. His work is included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Long Beach Museum of Art, 20th Century Fox, Capital Group, Inc., Los Angeles, and Creative Artists Agency, Beverly Hills. This is his fourth solo exhibition with Brian Gross Fine Art.
