 Stephen Sollins: Static Drawings

New York artist Stephen Sollins opens a show of new work, Static Drawings, at Brian Gross Fine Art on Thursday, January 4, with a reception for the artist from 5:30-7:30 pm. The exhibition will continue through Feburary 17.

The six drawings to be shown are from the Static Series, which Sollins began in 2002. Each work is made with correction fluid on newsprint ranging from 23 × 15 inches to 45 × 33 inches. The artist takes television, movie and sports listings from various newspapers and whites out elements, thereby erasing the "distractions," and creating gridded, structural patterns. The repetitious process of mark-making comments on the passage of time and addresses the idea of coming to terms with the monotonous moments in life.

All of Sollins' work takes mundane, everyday objects and transforms them into works of art, reflecting on family, communication and non-communication in the domestic space. In his previous exhibition at Brian Gross Fine Art in 2005, Domestic Scenes, Sollins exhibited a series of removed embroidery works that challenged notions within the craft community and sparked controversy.

Stephen Sollins received his M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1997 and his B.A. from Bard College in 1990. His work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions in New York, Louisiana, New Mexico and California. Recently, the artist's work was included in the group show, Embroidered Stories/Knitted Tales, at the Bedford Gallery, Dean Lesher Regional Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek, California. Stephen Sollins' work is part of the collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Achenbach Foundation of Art at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Progressive Corporation. Static Drawings will be Sollins' fifth solo show at Brian Gross Fine Art.
